Create A Chapter in Your Community
Self-advocates and an advisor will work together to educate, empower and engage persons with disabilities .
2. Set up an organizing committee to outline roles and responsibilities. Determine who willlead until elections are held.
3. Contact the People First of Alabama State Office to arrange an organizational training meeting prior to the launch of your chapter.
4. Identify a date, time and place for your first meeting and invite identified persons to attend.
5. Create agenda, an appropriate meeting space, serve refreshments, identify mission & goals of your chapter and plan future events.

Be willing to serve as a supporter to your local chapter.
Help members understand disability rights issues in words that are easy to understand.
Give advice when needed. Refrain from advising when the chapter is voting.
Collaborate with officers to promote meetings on appropriate issues.
Help members impact their communities and the lives of persons with disabilities.
Become familiar with organizational rules of People First of Alabama.
Assist with making purchases for your chapter.
Attend both chapter and executive committee meetings.
Attend any training sessions with officers or members.
Help chapters promote membership and fundraising.

Reach out to local self-advocates who want to support each other by attending meetings, learning about issues related to
disability rights, and partnering with other groups to make dreams come true.
Identify members in the group with leadership skills and elect officers.
Learn about the history of People First of Alabama and disability rights.
Establish details about when and where to meet.
Plan meetings that have interesting topics, foster independence and self-determination.
Plan social events where friends can gather and celebrate one another.
Become involved with other groups that promote disability rights to create alliances.
Promote People First in the community by participating in community activities.
